Ottrélite (Ex Belgian Museum) | Concrete Mineral Display
Ottrélite (Ex Belgian Museum) | Concrete Mineral Display
Anchored to a custom, concrete base is a specimen showcasing dark green crystals of the rare Manganese silicate mineral Ottrélite from the Type Locality in Ottré, Belgium.
Ex Vandenbroucke Museum collection from Waregem, Belgium.
I cast the base with fresh, high strength concrete and set copper wire "rebar" into the concrete. The wire is securely anchoring the specimen to the base. This particular base was the one of the first attempts using concrete with larger aggregate. As my wife puts it - "rocks on rocks."
The concrete was then coated in a couple polymer clear coats to preserve the labels and provide longevity to the display. I have affixed soft felt pads to the base of the display to protect the base and any surface that it might be placed on.
