Magnetite, Chromite, Serpentine Hatchet | Fantasy & Minerals
Magnetite, Chromite, Serpentine Hatchet | Fantasy & Minerals
This listing is for a decorative hatchet/axe that I have crafted by hand using a locally found stone with wood handle and leather strap.
The axe head is a natural occurring specimen of Magnetite, Chromite & Serpentine. This was another recent self-find of mine back in August, 2025 from Everson, Washington, USA.
The wood was thoroughly sanded using various grades of sandpaper, stained with a blue-grey wood stain and finished with multiple top polymer coats. The stone axe head was affixed with a leather strap and dab of silicon gel to keep it firmly affixed. The axe head itself has also been finished with a poly coat to keep it presentable.
Yes, the axe head is actually naturally magnetic! The stone has a dark green matrix with a creamy, white crust. I had a chemical analysis completed by Excalibur Mineral Corp. to confirm the chemical composition of the specimen. The green matrix is Serpentine; the black inclusions are Magnetite and the metallic/glassy mineral in the vugs is Chromite (chromium ore)!
